Steps

  1. 1
First gather all the necessary instruments like paper, pencil, pencil sharpener and eraser gum. For coloring you can chose from colored pencils, crayons, markers or watercolors. You'll have to use a quality paper if you want your color to come out nicely.
  2. 2
Start by sketching a long vertical line, divided in two unequal parts. The shorter part will be the head and the longer part will be the body. Ideally, the body should be at least six times the length of the head.

Now, over the vertical line, sketch the position of the body, creating a “skeleton” using horizontal lines for hips and shoulders and vertical lines for arms and legs.

    • Being a contra-post al position, the line of the shoulders and the line of the hips have to be inclined in opposite directions.
    • Finish up the “skeleton” with rectangular shapes for the hands and fit.
  4. 4
Now, dress up the “skeleton” in a body shape.

  5. Over all of these sketches outline the shape of the body and draw the breasts. Keep in mind that women have rounded shapes, and that the hips have to be at least the same width as the shoulders.
    • Add details like facial features and hair, fingers and toes, knee caps, etc..
  6. 6
Erase the lines of the sketches and strengthen the lines of the drawing.
    • Add color if you wish or leave it as it is.

 Tips

  • The more you practice the better you get at it!
  • Compare pieces and parts of the body with other parts of the body. A finger or a pencil can help as a marker. Just look at the picture from a bit away with one eye squinted and see if it's spaced out correctly.
  • To check for correct proportions look at the image upside down. This is a great tip for those who are looking for accuracy.
  • Space things out beforehand and make sure all your proportions are correct before going in with details. You don't want to end up putting a great amount of effort into dazzling eyes when you realize one's higher than the other.
  • Look in the mirror at the pose you are drawing, always check for out of portion limbs along side with body parts.
  • When drawing the female body remember that a woman has smaller shoulders than men. It is a common begging mistake to draw a woman with larger and bulkier along side with drawing them too small. Look at proportions as you draw to make sure you are keeping the anatomy proportioned.
